May 1, 1939 - December 8, 2021
(Gary) "Mr. Pete" Matousek made his last inappropriate comment on December 8, 2021. If you are wondering if you ever met Pete, you didn't, because you WOULD remember. For those who did meet and know him, we apologize, as we're sure he probably offended you at some point during your encounter with him. He was world renowned for not holding back and telling you what he thought. Pete was born on May 1, 1939. He was the son of Art Matousek and Genevieve Wachs; he was the younger brother of Gerry (all deceased). Pete spent his childhood and early adulthood (who are we kidding, his whole adulthood) doing whatever he wanted, never listening to his mother (or anyone) and always having the last word. He was challenged by the nuns at Immaculate Conception School in Willoughby where he almost met his match. We're not saying the nuns won, but they put up a good fight, that was, until he climbed out of the second story window during detention. Pete's fondness for authority (his own - not others) followed him to Willoughby Union High School and, later, into the Army. Pete worked at Addressograph Multigraph and the Cleveland Plain Dealer, as a truck driver, for 20+ years. For the last 26 years, Pete owned and operated Mr. Pete's Sports Bar in Mentor on the Lake. Pete never passed by a blackjack table if there was a seat open, and he would take a bet on ANYTHING (unless you didn't know who was in the Kentucky Derby, and, then, he'd hang up on you). Lots of folks wanted to hang around Pete just because they knew he was going to say or do something unforgettable (like drop his pants in a bar to pull up his socks while illustrating a joke). Pete was a great storyteller, but, sometimes, he WAS the story! And, for that reason, he was loved (or tolerated) by many. In addition to his friends, Pete leaves behind two daughters, Loee (Bill) Garlisi and Carla Matousek. Both were the product of his marriage to Jean (Evans), who put up with his crap for over 28 years before divorcing him but loving him until she passed in 2010. He will be missed by his five grandchildren, Tyler Stotsky, Renata (Shawn) Snyder, Kenna Stotsky, Daria Iacovone (and future grandson-in-law, Nick Valentino), and Rick Hunter, and one great-grandchild, Mathew Gray. He adored each one of them. They will miss hearing him offer "to come get them, if they ever ended up in jail" because Pete knew a thing or two about jail!! To his daughters' amazement, Pete was, actually, able to snag a WONDERFUL woman, Diana Christopher, and he held on to her for the past 6 years. He loved her dearly! Pete, also, created great memories with Diana's children and grandchildren, Michael Christopher, Michelle Bicker, and Joe (Jill) Christopher, Brandon and Marty Bicker, Brandy Christopher, and Carmina Stray. Pete will be having a reunion in heaven with his buddy Jimmy (probably trying to pick up a girl half his age), "blind Freddy", and his sister Gerry. Despite Pete's know-it-all disposition, cutting remarks, and crudeness, there is actual evidence that he was a loving, giving, and caring person. That evidence is the deep sorrow and pain, in our hearts, that we, his family, feel about his passing. Pete led a full life with no regrets and had a peaceful death. He was ready to meet his Maker; we, just, hope "The Maker" is ready to meet Pete. Good luck God! We considered establishing a Go-Fund-Me account for the Jim Beam distillery in Kentucky, as we anticipate they are about to experience significant hardship. Keep them, too, in your thoughts. Visitation will be held from 2-4 & 6-8 PM on Monday, December 13, 2021 at Monreal Srnick Funeral Home 35400 Curtis Blvd. Eastlake, Ohio 44095. A memorial service will immediately follow at 8 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to The American Lung Association.
