Miles R. Kanning

Miles Roy Kanning, age 88, of Willowick, Ohio, passed away peacefully at home on September 27, 2025. He was the beloved husband of Helga (nee Fanslau) and the father and role model for his children Mark, Monica (Jeff), David (Angie), Paul, and Peter. He leaves brother Tom (Judy) many grandchildren, nieces, and nephews while he will be joining his parents Herb and Velma, brothers Neil and Glenn, and grandson Grant in heaven. Miles grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana attending Emmaus Lutheran Elementary School followed by Concordia High School where he was part of the ROTC and played football. He graduated from Purdue University (1960) with his degree in Civil Engineering. Upon graduation he followed his best friend, Phil, to Cleveland where he and Phil worked on creating an inner-city basketball team at Zion Lutheran Church and School in downtown Cleveland. This is where he met his wife Helga whom he married in 1964 and stayed loyal and faithful to until his passing. His professional career included working for H.K Ferguson, Trygve Hoff, The City of Cleveland, and the Lake Country Engineering office. One of his favorite jobs was being the Chief Engineer at Cleveland Hopkins Airport. H was also a member of the Army National Guard with honorable discharge in 1963 followed by being in the Army Reserve until 1966. Miles was beloved by so many and touched so many with his kind, gentle, Christian demeanor. His faith guided him through life and the many roles he played. Husband, father, friend, grandfather, uncle, Shore Haven Church elder, proud member of the Lutheran East School board member, Civil Engineer, member of National Reserve, world traveler (Europe, South Pacific, Central America, South America, Hawaii, most of the states, and the Caribbean), volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, Shore Haven church and choir member, competitive card player, golfer, backgammon player, Playhouse Square theater goer, Purdue graduate and life-long learner, teacher of bible class, and tomato plant guru. He loved dining out with life-long friends, watching and reading the news, playing Suduko, watching 'Madame Secretary', attending the Shaw Festival, reading, and making his famous Chek Mix. He loved being with friends and family and talking about his children and grandchildren. People who had the joy of meeting Miles throughout his life will remember his positivity, generosity, friendliness, compassion, empathy, peacefulness, mild manner, and his smile. Above all he was a man of God which provided a moral compass for his time on earth. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shore Haven Lutheran Church and/or Lutheran East High School, Cleveland Heights, Ohio. The family will receive friends Wednesday, October 1, 2025 from 4-7pm at Monreal Funeral Home, 35400 Curtis Blvd, Eastlake. Service will be held on Thursday, October 2, 11am, with a Gathering from 10am till 11am, at Shore Haven Lutheran Church, 280 E.222nd Street, Euclid, with burial at Lutheran Cemetery, 4566 Pearl Road, Cleveland followed by luncheon at Pine Ridge Country Club (Dino's Catering), 30601 Ridge Road, Wickliffe, Ohio.
