Marion McManus Smith

Marion McManus Smith, age 97, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2026, surrounded by her children, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of love, strength, compassion, and laughter. For nearly a century, Marion witnessed a changing world and met it with resilience, wisdom, and grace. She devoted her life to caring for others, both within her family and in her professional calling. Born in Brooklyn, NY on February 14, 1929, to Marion (Clarke) McManus and John J. McManus, Marion enjoyed having a Valentine Birthday. She was a graduate of St. Catherine's School of Nursing in Brooklyn and worked as an Operating Room nurse until she met her late husband of 54 years Joseph S. Smith, Sr. and with him raised their eight children. Their marriage was a testament to enduring love, partnership, and devotion to family. After locating to the greater Cleveland area, Marion returned to her nursing career and served as a geriatric nurse for 15 years at Menorah Park Home for the Aging, where she provided comfort, dignity, and skilled care to residents and their families. At Menorah Park Marion met her dear friends Judy, Celeste and Trula, "The Bridge Club", who after retirement have gathered weekly to share in life's joys and trials. Marion is survived by her eight children: Marita (Fred) Perlak of St. Louis, MO; Loretto (Walter) Hrycenko of Toms River, NJ; Joseph S. Smith, Jr. (Meredith) of Riverside, CT; John Smith of Phoenix, AZ; Ellie (Chris) Chalko of Willowick, OH; Bill Smith (Denise) of Eastlake, OH; Vincent Smith of Willowick, OH; and Regina (John) DeFalco of Wyckoff, NJ. She was the proud grandmother of 16 and great-grandmother of 11, each of whom brought her immense joy and pride. Her greatest happiness was found in her family. She offered unconditional love, and a listening ear to generations who were blessed to call her mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. Even in challenging moments, she had a way of bringing light and laughter to those around her. Her stories, her quick wit, and her warm laughter will remain treasured gifts in the hearts of all who knew her. Marion's family would like to thank the staff at Vitalia of Highland Heights and Miracle City Hospice for their care and support, and especially our "other sister" Marcia McKinney for her friendship and dedication in caring for our mother. Marion's Funeral Mass will be celebrated by her grandson, Fr. Kevin Hrycenko on Monday, April 27, 2026 at 10AM at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church 29850 Euclid Avenue, Wickliffe, Ohio. Relatives and friends are invited to the visitation on Sunday, April 26, 2026 from 3-7 PM at Monreal Srnick Funeral Home 35400 Curtis Blvd. Eastlake, Ohio 44095. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to The St. Vincent DePaul Society at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish.
